Weather, Temperature & Climate of India

For a country of dimensions as vast as India, generalizing its climate can be a little tricky. The Indian landmass includes Himalayas in the north, the arid Thar desert in the West, an elongated Ghat section on its eastern, southern and western coastline and the huge Deccan Plateau in its centre. Naturally, the climatic conditions in India vary regionally with changing terrains and landforms. However, India is primarily a tropical country and Indian climate, diverse as it is, can be broadly segmented into four major seasons.

  1. Winters – January, February and December (Average Temperature – 10°- 15°C)
  2. Summer – March, April, May and June (Average Temperature – 30°- 45° C)
  3. Monsoon – July, August and September (Average Temperature – 22°- 30°C)
  4. Post-Monsoon Autumn – October and November (Average Temperature – 15°- 20° C)

This is a table of the various climatic regions in India. Note the diversity in landform and the corresponding change in climatic conditions. Based on each region’s climatic characteristics, Indian Holiday plans its seasonal itineraries. For example, if you are visiting in the months of May or June, we would offer a tailormade itinerary to the Himalayas – Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand. However, if your choice of tour is in the winter months of January or December, we’d suggest you visit Rajasthan, Delhi or Goa. Our tour expert would further explain the climatic dynamics of the Indian subcontinent when you make an enquiry with us.

Name of Climatic Region States or Territories
Tropical Rainforest Assam and parts of the Sahyadri Mountain Range
Tropical Savannah Sahyadri Mountain Range and parts of Maharashtra
Tropical and Subtropical Steppe Parts of Punjab and Gujarat
Tropical Desert Most Parts of Rajasthan
Moist Subtropical with Winter Parts of Punjab, Assam, and Rajasthan
Mountain Climate Parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttaranchal
Drought Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Haryana
Tropical Semi-Arid Steppe Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and other parts of South India

Indian weather condition can be divided into three major seasons
  • Winter
  • Summer
  • Monsoon

Winter months (November-March) are bright and pleasant, with snowfall in the northern hills. Summer time (April-June) is hot in most parts of India, and it is then that the numerous hill resorts provide cool retreat. During the monsoon, rainfall is heavy along the West Coast between June and September, and along the East Coast between mid-October and December.
